Terms of Service

These terms describe responsible use of the SILKEN research interface and the CADC, CANFAR, archive, and community services it connects.

Acceptance

By accessing or using hosted SILKEN services, you agree to use them for legitimate research, academic, educational, and scientific purposes in accordance with these terms and the policies of connected infrastructure.

Service description

SILKEN provides progressive sky imagery, catalog discovery and queries, overlays, time-domain frames, saved workspaces, and tools that may coordinate private CANFAR contributed or headless sessions. Features and connected data sources may change as the research software evolves.

Accounts and credentials

You are responsible for maintaining the security of your CADC/CANFAR and related accounts. Do not share access tokens, proxy certificates, private keys, session cookies, or runtime URLs. Access only data and compute resources for which you are authorized.

Research data

You retain responsibility for the code, queries, data, workflows, derived products, and publications you create or import. Confirm that your use complies with applicable licenses, proprietary periods, collaboration agreements, institutional requirements, and law.

SILKEN visualizations and crossmatches are analysis aids. Verify coordinates, units, provenance, uncertainties, and scientific interpretations against authoritative source data before relying on results.

Acceptable use

Do not use SILKEN to disrupt services, evade quotas, probe accounts or resources without authorization, distribute malicious code, or submit workloads that violate CADC, CANFAR, archive, or institutional policies.

Use reasonable query limits and compute resources, especially when working with public archives or shared infrastructure.

Repository and tool execution

You are responsible for reviewing a repository, immutable commit, container image, exact command, dependency plan, mounts, input mappings, and network warning before trusting and running a tool. A source update requires a new trust decision.

Do not run malicious or unauthorized code. Dependency installation and tool execution can consume shared compute, contact third-party networks, or process sensitive research data. npm lifecycle scripts are disabled unless you explicitly enable them for the reviewed revision.

Connected services

Authentication, storage, compute, catalogs, images, and external links may be supplied by independent services including CADC, CANFAR, Arbutus, CanDIAPL MMP, GitHub, and astronomy archives. Their own terms, quotas, availability, attribution requirements, and security boundaries also apply.

Availability

SILKEN is research software provided as available. Sessions, archives, and dependent services may be interrupted, changed, or withdrawn. Keep independent copies of important research artifacts and do not treat an interactive session as the only copy of critical data.

Questions and changes

These terms may be updated as the service and its integrations change. Material revisions will be reflected by the effective date above. Questions may be raised through the CanDIAPL website or the SILKEN repository.
